Review: Tape - Revelationes

Tape - Revelationes (Immune/Häpna - CD and LP - March 7, 2011)

Picking up pretty much where Luminarium, their last album, left off, Revelationes features a more "digital" sound (for lack of a better word). To these ears, Luminarium was very organic, and Revelationes, while completely shimmery, dusty, and creaky, has a more overtly "computer" feel to it.

So, my overall opinion: Lovely, immersive, everything smart and restrained post-rock should be... but not quite as immediately charming as Luminarium.

If you´re not familiar with Tape, it´s a Swedish trio formed by Andreas and Johan Berthling with Tomas Halonsten. They construct their songs out of carefully semi-improvised tunes that carry many kaleidoscopic layers of melody and texture, all with a delicate pop sensibility that always stays light. Comparisons to Tortoise are not off, and you´ll feel a bit jazzed occasionally too. What really completes it for me are those idiosyncratic sweeps of constantly mutating electronics, tastefully filling the sonic space with captivating detail.

Let me recommend a few more personal highlights from the lovely Häpna label:

Oren Ambarchi & Johan Berthling - My Days Are Darker Than Your Nights (harrowing apocalyptic drone to burn a hole in your brain)

Stephan Mathieu - On Tape (uncharacteristically unprocessed electronic drone, absolute treat)

Tape - Rideau (first Tape album I heard, singular pastoral post rock), Luminarium (to me their best album)
